{Section III} Shining Spears and Armored Horses, Beacon Fire and Gunpowder Smoke
Shanhaiguan is located at the centre of the Liaoxi Corridor, which provides access to and guards the entrance to the central plains on which the ancient capital of China was located. High-ranking officers were thus assigned by the governments of both Ming and Qing dynasties to administer this location, and personnel sent here established strict military management systems. Over the past 600 years, wars and hostilities frequently occurred in and around Shanhaiguan. During the modern historical period, Shanhaiguan Great Wall witnessed many Chinese acts of resistance against foreign aggressions. In particular, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese United Front forces forced back Japanese intruders, with heroic and patriotic deeds being performed under the eaves of Shanhaiguan’s towering gateways.
